Two Different Ways to Store Force

An extension spring stretches. It sits along the horizontal track on each side, pulling through a pulley and cable as the door comes down. A torsion spring twists instead, mounted on a shaft above the opening, turning a drum that winds the lift cable. Stretch against twist sounds like a detail, but it changes failure behaviour completely.

The Failure Modes Are Not Equal

A stretched unit under load that parts becomes a projectile unless a containment cable has been threaded through its middle. Plenty of older homes here have no containment cable at all. Balance and Feel

The twisting arrangement holds a door level through the whole travel because the drum diameter is matched to the lift. The stretching arrangement pulls harder near the floor than near the header, so those doors tend to drift or hang slightly crooked as the two sides age at different rates. What a Conversion Involves

Converting means adding a shaft, a centre bearing plate, two end bearing plates, a drum at each end and fresh lift cable, then removing the old pulleys. It needs adequate headroom above the opening, typically about twelve inches, and a solid header to anchor into. Is It Worth Doing

If the door itself is sound and you are already paying for spring replacement, the extra cost of conversion is modest and buys a quieter, safer, better balanced result.
