Headroom, Backroom, and Side Room

Before anybody quotes a door, three clearance measurements decide what can physically be installed. Headroom

Headroom is the distance from the top of the opening to the lowest obstruction on the ceiling. A conventional torsion setup wants about twelve inches to house the shaft, the bearing plates and the curve of the track. Twelve is the comfortable figure; a low clearance kit can work in under eight by moving the drums outboard and changing the track profile.

Backroom

Backroom is how far the horizontal track can run into the garage, measured from the inside face of the opening to the back wall. The rule of thumb is the door height plus about eighteen inches, then more again if an opener rail is going in behind it. Storage shelving on the back wall is the usual thing that steals it.

Side Room

Side room is the flat wall beside the opening on each side, and the vertical track plus its brackets need roughly three and a half to four inches. Openings squeezed against a corner or a stair stringer often have it on one side and not the other, which is worth discovering before the old door comes off rather than after.

Measuring Without Guessing

Measure to the lowest thing in the way, not to the joists, because a light fitting, a duct or a water line counts. Measure side room at the top and the bottom, since old frames rack. Write the width and height of the opening itself as well, since a nominal sixteen by seven is frequently neither once you check it.

When a Measurement Falls Short

Short headroom is solved with a low clearance kit or a jackshaft unit mounted on the wall beside the opening, which removes the ceiling rail entirely. Short backroom is solved the same way. Short side room may mean relocating an electrical box or accepting a narrower door. None of these is exotic, but all of them cost more than the standard fit.
