How to Run a Balance Test

There is one test that tells you more about a garage door than any other, it takes five minutes, and almost nobody performs it. The maintenance sequence at Long Beach Garage Door Service, CA 121 Melody puts this check first, because a Long Beach household that runs it twice a year will see nearly every mechanical failure coming.

What You Are Actually Testing

You are testing whether the stored lifting force still matches the weight of the door. When those two agree, the assembly is effectively weightless and the motor is only guiding it. When they drift apart, the motor starts doing the lifting, which is not what it was built for and which shortens its life quickly.

The Procedure

Close the door. Pull the emergency release cord to disconnect the trolley. Lift by hand to waist height and let go. A correctly set door stays where you put it, give or take a couple of inches of creep. Raise it fully and let go again, then lower it to the floor slowly and note whether it wants to run away from you at the bottom.

Reading the Result

Drifting down means the lift is weak, which is normal as a torsion spring ages and loses turns. Rising on its own means it is overwound or the door has lost weight, usually after a section was replaced with a lighter one. Anything that feels heavy at chest height and light at the floor is a cable or drum issue rather than a tension issue.

Effort Is a Number

A properly balanced residential door takes about ten pounds of effort to move by hand. If it takes both arms, stop and call somebody, because the failure that is coming will arrive with the door in motion. The point of this test is precisely to convert a sudden failure into a scheduled spring replacement.

Reconnecting Afterwards

Return the door to the closed position before reconnecting, then run the opener once and watch it. If it now strains where it did not before, the force setting has been compensating for a balance problem all along and both need attention. Doing this check before every seasonal lubrication makes it a habit rather than a job.
